Amigurumi Basics

Amigurumi (็ทจใฟใใ‚‹ใฟ) is the Japanese art of crocheting small stuffed creatures using continuous rounds. The key technique is the magic ring (also called magic circle or adjustable ring), which allows you to start with a tight center that closes completely โ€” unlike a chain ring which leaves a hole.

Work in a continuous spiral rather than joined rounds with a slip stitch. Use a stitch marker to track the first stitch of each round. Stuff with polyester fiberfill as you go โ€” do not wait until the end, as it becomes difficult to reach deep into the body.

Amigurumi uses a tighter gauge than typical crochet to prevent stuffing from showing through the fabric. Size down your hook one or two sizes from the yarn's recommended hook.

Safety Eyes Sizing Guide

Safety eye size is proportional to the finished piece. For amigurumi 2โ€“4 inches tall, use 6mm eyes. For 4โ€“6 inch pieces, use 8โ€“9mm. For 6โ€“10 inch pieces, use 10โ€“12mm. Larger statement pieces (10+ inches) often use 15โ€“18mm eyes. Always insert safety eyes before stuffing and closing the piece, as the backing washers cannot be removed once attached.

For pieces intended for children under 3 years, embroider eyes with yarn instead of using plastic safety eyes to eliminate any choking hazard.
