Pricing Handmade Items
A common formula for pricing handmade goods is: Materials + Labor + Overhead × Markup = Retail Price. The markup (typically 2.5× to 4×) covers profit, business expenses, and the value of your creativity. Selling below cost — even at wholesale — is a losing proposition long-term.
For Etsy: every listing costs $0.20, a 6.5% transaction fee applies to the sale price plus shipping, and Etsy Payments adds 3% + $0.25 per transaction. Factor these in before setting your price.
The 2.5× / 3× / 4× Rule
2.5× — wholesale pricing (if selling to retailers who will mark up further). 3× — standard retail for online marketplaces. 4× — boutique, gallery, or premium market pricing, especially for one-of-a-kind or highly detailed work. Higher markup is always easier to justify with better photography and clear brand positioning.
