Safe Sleep Guidelines (AAP)
- ✓Back to sleep, every timeAlways place baby on their back for every sleep — naps and nighttime.
- ✓Firm, flat sleep surfaceUse an approved crib, bassinet, or play yard with a firm, flat mattress and tight-fitting sheet.
- ✓Nothing in the cribNo pillows, blankets, bumpers, positioners, or stuffed animals. Keep the sleep space bare.
- ✓Room-share, don't bed-shareThe AAP recommends sharing a room (not a bed) for at least the first 6 months, ideally 1 year.
- ✓Avoid overheatingDress baby lightly. Check for sweating or flushed skin. Keep the room 68–72°F (20–22°C).
- ✓Pacifier use is OKOffering a pacifier at sleep time may reduce SIDS risk. Don't force it if baby refuses.
- ✓No smoking, alcohol, or drugs near babyExposure significantly increases SIDS risk.
About These Guidelines
Sleep recommendations are based on guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the National Sleep Foundation (NSF). Every baby is unique — these ranges are guidelines, not rigid rules. Follow your baby's sleep cues and consult your pediatrician if you have concerns about your baby's sleep patterns.
