About the Navy Method

The U.S. Navy circumference method estimates body fat using simple body measurements. For men: BF% = 86.010 ร— log10(waist โˆ’ neck) โˆ’ 70.041 ร— log10(height) + 36.76. For women, hip circumference is added to the formula.

This method has an accuracy of approximately ยฑ3โ€“4% compared to DEXA scans. It is most accurate for individuals with average body proportions. It may underestimate body fat in very muscular individuals and overestimate in those with unusual fat distribution patterns.

For clinical precision, consider DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), hydrostatic weighing, or a Bod Pod assessment.
