How Calories Are Calculated

Formula: Calories = MET × Weight (kg) × Time (hours). MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) is a standardized measure of exercise intensity relative to sitting at rest (1 MET = resting metabolism ≈ 1 kcal/kg/hour).

Example: Running at 8 km/h has a MET of ~8.3. A 70kg person running for 30 minutes burns: 8.3 × 70 × 0.5 = 290 calories.

Limitations: These are estimates. Actual calorie burn varies by fitness level, body composition, efficiency, and environmental conditions. Individual variation can be ±20–30%.

Afterburn (EPOC): High-intensity exercise like HIIT and heavy lifting creates excess post-exercise oxygen consumption — you continue burning extra calories for hours after stopping.
