Why Fragrance Load Matters
Fragrance load is the percentage of fragrance oil relative to the weight of wax. Too little and your candle has weak scent throw. Too much and the excess fragrance oil cannot bind to the wax โ it pools on top, creates fire hazards, and may inhibit proper burning.
Always weigh your fragrance oil (do not measure by volume). A kitchen scale accurate to 0.1g makes a real difference in scent consistency across batches.
Max Fragrance Load by Wax Type
| Wax Type | Max FO % | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Soy (container) | 10% | Lower density; popular for clean burn |
| Paraffin | 12% | Best scent throw; traditional choice |
| Beeswax | 6% | Naturally fragrant; holds less FO |
| Coconut | 12% | Excellent hot throw; softer wax |
| Blend | 10% | Varies by blend ratio |
The Density Formula
Melted wax does not fill a container the same as water. We use a wax density factor of 0.86 โ meaning 1 fl oz of container space requires about 0.86 oz of wax by weight. A 5% overage is added for pour waste and surface shrinkage.
