Why Following a Maintenance Schedule Matters
Skipping scheduled maintenance is the leading cause of preventable mechanical failures. An ignored transmission fluid change can turn a $150 service into a $3,000+ rebuild. Neglected coolant allows acidic fluid to corrode aluminum components. The maintenance schedule exists because engineers tested these intervals to failure โ they are not conservative estimates.
Finding Your Vehicle's Exact Schedule
Every vehicle has a maintenance schedule in the owner's manual โ usually a booklet in the glove compartment or a section in the digital manual. Manufacturer intervals are the authoritative source, as they vary by engine design, fluid specifications, and engineering validation. This tool provides general industry intervals as a starting point.
What "Severe Duty" Service Means
Most manufacturers define two service schedules: normal and severe. Severe duty applies if you frequently drive in stop-and-go traffic, tow or haul heavy loads, drive in extreme temperatures, drive in dusty conditions, or make many short trips under 5 miles. If severe duty applies, use the shorter intervals for oil, filters, and fluids โ typically half the normal interval.
