⚠️ Grades are approximate: Climbing grades are subjective and vary by region, rock type, first ascentionist's opinion, and era. A 6b in Spain may feel like 6b+ in France. A V5 at your home gym may feel like V3 outdoors. Use grades as rough guides, not precise measurements.
🪨 Sport vs bouldering grades: Sport/trad grades describe the hardest single move or sequence on a route. Bouldering grades describe the difficulty of a short problem (typically 5–20 moves). They are not directly comparable — a V8 boulderer may only climb 7b sport due to endurance requirements, and vice versa.
🧠 Grade sandbag vs soft: Sandbagged routes feel harder than their grade. Soft routes feel easier. Areas known for sandbagging: UK Peak District, Yosemite. Areas known for soft grades: some Spanish sport crags. When climbing a new area, warm up well below your usual limit.
