Contrast Ratio
WCAG Contrast Requirements
WCAG AA (minimum): Normal text needs a ratio of at least 4.5:1. Large text (18pt+ or 14pt bold) needs 3:1. This is the legal standard for accessibility in most countries.
WCAG AAA (enhanced): Normal text needs 7:1, large text needs 4.5:1. Harder to achieve but provides the best experience for users with low vision.
Marketing note: Dark text on white or light backgrounds nearly always passes. Common failures include light gray text on white, or low-contrast colored text (e.g. yellow on white). All marketing emails, ads, and landing pages should meet at least AA.
