The 60-30-10 rule
A classic interior design guideline that translates beautifully to quilts: use your dominant fabric for 60% of the quilt, a secondary fabric for 30%, and an accent for 10%. This creates visual balance while still making a statement.
Equal proportions
Equal proportions (e.g., 33/33/34 across 3 fabrics) create a bold, graphic look — great for modern quilts. Scrappy quilts with many fabrics often use near-equal proportions for a spontaneous effect.
Yardage note
Yardage is calculated from the block's cut size (finished + ½" seam allowance), divided into strips from the full width of fabric. Values are rounded up to the nearest ⅛ yard. Always buy a little extra — 10% buffer is wise for cutting errors and squaring up.
