Pricing your handmade crafts fairly
The materials × 3 rule: A common starting formula for pricing handmade goods is to multiply your material cost by 3, then add your labour. The multiplier covers overhead, packaging, marketplace fees, and profit margin. Adjust it based on your market and the perceived value of your work.
Don't undervalue your time: Many craft sellers make the mistake of treating labour as free or charging below minimum wage. Your time has real value. Calculate what you need to earn per hour and price accordingly, even if it means your product is priced higher than mass-produced alternatives — buyers of handmade goods often expect to pay a premium.
Wastage and overhead: Materials are rarely used at 100% efficiency. Fabric gets offcuts, wire gets trimmed, glue gets wasted. Adding 10–15% for wastage accounts for this. Overhead costs — studio rent, tools, electricity, packaging, listing fees — are separate and should be factored in on top.
Market research: Check what similar items sell for on Etsy, at craft fairs, and in local boutiques. If your cost-based price is higher than market rates, you need to either reduce costs, improve perceived value through presentation and branding, or accept a lower margin on that product.
Wholesale vs retail: If selling wholesale to shops, the standard is to price at roughly half your retail price, which means your retail price must be at least 4× your cost to leave room for a viable wholesale arrangement.
