Aida vs Evenweave vs Linen
Aida cloth is woven in a regular grid of squares, making it very beginner-friendly โ each square represents one stitch. The count (11ct, 14ct, 18ct) refers to the number of squares per inch. Higher count = smaller stitches and finer finished work.
Evenweave fabrics (such as Jobelan or Lugana) have the same number of threads per inch in both directions but are woven differently to Aida. Stitches are typically worked over 2 threads, so a 28ct evenweave produces the same stitch size as 14ct Aida.
Linen is a natural evenweave with slight thread irregularities, giving it a traditional rustic look. It is harder for beginners since you need to count individual threads.
About the Border Allowance
A border of at least 2โ3 inches on each side is recommended to leave room for framing, finishing in a hoop, or preventing the fabric from fraying during stitching. For projects going into a frame, 3 inches is a safe minimum. For scroll frames or large projects, 4โ5 inches provides extra security.
