How fabric count works

Aida fabric has a visible weave grid โ€” the count tells you how many stitches (crosses) fit in one inch. 14-count is the most popular beginner fabric: each stitch is about 1/14". A design that's 140 stitches wide will be exactly 10" wide on 14-count.

For evenweave (28ct, 32ct), stitches are typically worked over 2 threads, so the effective count is half: 28ct evenweave gives the same stitch size as 14ct Aida.

Margin recommendations

Always add at least 2โ€“3 inches on each side for framing, finishing, or mounting. For framed pieces, 3" is standard. For ornaments or small finishing projects, 1โ€“2" may be enough. The calculator uses your chosen margin on all four sides.

Fabric to buy

The "fabric to buy" size = design size + (2 ร— margin) on each dimension. Buy the next standard size up from a retailer, or cut from a full sheet. Common fabric pre-cuts are 12ร—18", 18ร—24", and full sheets at 18ร—27" or larger.
