How fabric count works
Aida fabric has a visible weave grid โ the count tells you how many stitches (crosses) fit in one inch. 14-count is the most popular beginner fabric: each stitch is about 1/14". A design that's 140 stitches wide will be exactly 10" wide on 14-count.
For evenweave (28ct, 32ct), stitches are typically worked over 2 threads, so the effective count is half: 28ct evenweave gives the same stitch size as 14ct Aida.
Margin recommendations
Always add at least 2โ3 inches on each side for framing, finishing, or mounting. For framed pieces, 3" is standard. For ornaments or small finishing projects, 1โ2" may be enough. The calculator uses your chosen margin on all four sides.
Fabric to buy
The "fabric to buy" size = design size + (2 ร margin) on each dimension. Buy the next standard size up from a retailer, or cut from a full sheet. Common fabric pre-cuts are 12ร18", 18ร24", and full sheets at 18ร27" or larger.
