1 DMC skein = 8.7 yards. These estimates assume even distribution across colors. Buy 1 extra skein of any color used heavily or for dark/hard-to-match colors.

How Thread Length Is Calculated

Each cross stitch uses two passes of thread through the fabric โ€” one diagonal, one back. The length consumed per stitch depends on how close together the holes are (fabric count) and how many strands are used. The formula used here is: thread per stitch = count factor ร— 2 ร— strands, where the count factor is 1.2" for 11ct, 1.0" for 14ct, 0.9" for 16ct, and 0.8" for 18ct.

One standard DMC skein contains approximately 8.7 yards (8 meters) of usable thread. Skeins are typically divided into 6 strands; for 2-strand work you get three lengths from each group.

Using a Needle Minder

A needle minder uses two small magnets to hold your needle on the fabric when you are not actively stitching. This prevents lost needles and reduces the temptation to leave the needle parked in the fabric where it can leave a mark or rust. Simply place one magnet on the front of your fabric and the other behind โ€” the needle snaps between them.

Starting Knot vs Away Knot

Never use a permanent knot at the start of your thread as it creates lumps visible through the fabric. Instead use an away knot (a temporary knot placed an inch away from your start area, which is cut off after the thread is anchored by subsequent stitches) or simply bury the thread tail under the first few stitches on the back of the fabric.
