Cross-Stitch Thread Skein Estimator
Estimate how many skeins of embroidery floss you need per color โ based on stitch count, fabric count, and strands used.

Stitches will be divided equally among all colors.
How thread consumption is estimated
The standard estimate is approximately 1 inch of thread per stitch (cross-stitch over 1 square of fabric). This accounts for both strands traveling across and back, plus normal starting and stopping waste. On thicker fabric counts or with more strands, consumption can be slightly higher.
The formula used: thread (inches) = stitches ร 1" ร strands. Then divide by 346" (8m per skein ร 39.37"/m) to get skein count, rounded up.
Strand count guide
1 strand โ very fine detail, backstitching, miniatures. 2 strands โ standard for 14ct Aida, gives solid coverage. 3 strands โ bold look, often used on 11ct or for heavy coverage. Most patterns specify the strand count.
Buffer recommendation
The 20% buffer accounts for color re-threading, mistakes, and dye lot differences. Always buy an extra skein of any color you're unsure about โ matching dye lots later can be difficult.
