What Is Dimensional Weight?
Dimensional weight (also called DIM weight or volumetric weight) is a pricing technique used by shipping carriers to account for the space a package takes up relative to its actual weight. Carriers charge based on whichever is greater โ the actual weight or the dimensional weight.
The formula is: DIM Weight = (Length ร Width ร Height) รท DIM Factor. Each carrier uses a slightly different DIM factor: UPS and FedEx use 139, DHL uses 139, and USPS uses 166 for most services (cubic inches per pound).
Packaging Optimization Tips
Use right-sized boxes
Oversized boxes inflate DIM weight. Choose the smallest box that safely fits your product.
Reduce void fill
Every inch of unnecessary air space adds to your DIM weight. Use custom inserts or mailers where possible.
Compare carriers
USPS uses a higher DIM factor (166 vs 139), which can make it cheaper for light but bulky packages.
Consider flat-rate options
For heavy, compact items, USPS Priority Mail flat-rate boxes ignore weight entirely.
