Hoop Type Recommendations

Plastic Hoop (beginner)
Affordable and widely available. Good grip, less likely to damage fabric. Great for beginners and everyday embroidery.
Wood Hoop (display)
Classic look, ideal for framing or displaying finished work. Available in natural and painted finishes. May loosen slightly during stitching.
Flexi Hoop (travel)
Lightweight plastic with a flexible outer ring. Easy to carry, no screw to tighten. Good for stitching on the go with lighter fabrics.
Q-Snap Frame (large pieces)
Square or rectangular snap-together frame. No hoop marks, better for large projects or counted cross stitch. Fabric rolls up cleanly on the sides.

How to Hoop Fabric Correctly

Place the inner (smaller) hoop on a flat surface. Lay your fabric over it, centering your design. Press the outer hoop down over the fabric and inner hoop, then tighten the screw. The fabric should be drum-tight โ€” you should be able to tap it and hear a clear sound. Avoid pulling the fabric grain out of alignment (the weave should stay horizontal and vertical).

For cross stitch on Aida, always ensure the grid squares remain square after hooping. If you notice the fabric has gone on the bias, remove it and re-hoop.

Preventing Hoop Marks

Hoop marks (indentations left by the inner ring) can be minimized by: wrapping the inner hoop with cotton twill tape or bias binding, removing the hoop when you stop stitching for extended periods, and washing the finished piece according to fabric care instructions to relax the fibers.

Never leave your work hooped for weeks at a time โ€” the hoop compresses the fabric fibers and can leave a permanent ring especially on delicate fabrics.
