Choosing the Right Envelope

The standard rule is to choose an envelope that is at least 1/8" wider and taller than your card on each side — so 1/4" total clearance in each dimension. Too tight and the card will be difficult to insert; too loose and it will shift and look sloppy.

For handmade cards with bulky embellishments (brads, buttons, thick layers), allow even more clearance — 1/4" to 3/8" per side — and consider using a hand-addressed outer envelope with a glassine inner envelope to protect the card face.

Flap Types

Square flap: The flap is a square or diamond shape, folding down from the top. Common in A-series and announcement envelopes. Considered more formal and elegant.

Pointed/V flap: Classic pointed triangle flap. Standard on business and commercial envelopes. Very common and widely available.

Wallet/deep flap: A tall pointed or curved flap, often used on Baronial envelopes. Provides extra security and a luxurious feel.
