How LTL Freight Classes Work

The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system assigns freight classes from 50 to 500. Lower classes (denser freight) cost less to ship per pound; higher classes (lighter, bulkier, or more fragile freight) cost more. Class is primarily determined by density (weight รท cubic feet).

To calculate density: convert dimensions from inches to feet (divide each by 12), multiply to get cubic feet, then divide the weight in pounds by the cubic feet. The result maps directly to a freight class range.

Always verify your class with your carrier โ€” some commodities have NMFC-assigned classes regardless of density (e.g., electronics, hazmat, or fragile items).
