How Instagram Distributes Each Format
Instagram's algorithm treats Feed Posts, Reels, and Stories very differently. Reels are pushed to non-followers through the Explore page and the dedicated Reels tab, giving them the highest organic reach potential. Feed Posts are shown primarily to your existing followers, with saves and shares being the strongest signals that trigger wider distribution. Stories are ephemeral (24 hours) and reach your warmest audience — people who already follow you — making them ideal for direct engagement and conversions.
Engagement rate is calculated as (Likes + Comments + Saves + Shares) / Reach × 100. A healthy Instagram engagement rate is generally 1–5%. Save rate (saves / reach × 100) is one of the most important metrics because Instagram's algorithm heavily rewards saves as a signal of high-value content.
Use this comparator after collecting data from at least 5–10 posts per format to get a meaningful average, rather than relying on a single post's performance.
