Needle Materials: Bamboo, Metal, and Wood

Bamboo needles have a slight grip that keeps stitches from sliding off accidentally โ€” ideal for beginners or slippery yarns like silk and bamboo blends. They are lightweight and warm to the touch. The downside is they can flex or even break on very small sizes.

Metal (aluminum or stainless steel) needles are the fastest option. Stitches glide effortlessly, making them popular for experienced knitters and for yarns with good structure like wool. They are durable, precise, and maintain their shape over time. Cold to the touch at first, they warm up quickly.

Wood needles (rosewood, ebony, birch) fall between bamboo and metal. They have a smooth finish with just enough grip, feel warm and pleasant, and are often preferred for luxury yarns. Higher-quality wood needles can last a lifetime if cared for properly.

When to Size Up or Down

If your knitting is tighter than the pattern gauge (too many stitches per inch), go up one needle size. If it is looser (too few stitches per inch), go down one needle size. Always re-swatch after changing needle size. Some knitters naturally knit tight or loose, and the "correct" needle for them may differ from the pattern's suggestion by one or even two sizes.
