Bluebook Citation Rules

The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation is the dominant citation style in American legal writing. It prescribes specific formats for every type of legal authority so readers can locate sources quickly and unambiguously.

Case Law Format

Statute Format

Title U.S.C. ยง Section (Year). E.g., 42 U.S.C. ยง 1983 (2018). State codes follow a parallel pattern using the state abbreviation.

Regulation Format

Volume C.F.R. ยง Section (Year). E.g., 29 C.F.R. ยง 1910.134 (2024). C.F.R. stands for Code of Federal Regulations.

Law Review Format

Author, Title, Volume Journal FirstPage (Year). E.g., Jane Smith, Rethinking Liability, 112 Harv. L. Rev. 1234 (2022).

Book Format

Author, Title Page (Ed. Year). E.g., John Smith, The Law of Contracts 45 (3d ed. 2021).

Pincites

A pincite (pinpoint citation) directs the reader to the exact page of the relevant material. Always include one when citing a specific passage.

Note: This tool generates common Bluebook formats. Always verify against the current edition of the Bluebook for jurisdiction-specific or complex citations.
