Lightning Safety Rules

⚑ 30/30 Rule

If thunder follows flash in under 30 seconds β€” seek shelter. Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before going back outside.

🏠 Best shelter

Substantial building with plumbing and wiring. Stay away from windows and doors. Avoid contact with corded phones, water, and metal.

πŸš— Car shelter

A metal-roofed vehicle is safe (not a convertible). Close windows. Don't touch metal surfaces inside. Lightning current flows around the shell.

β›Ί Camping

Never shelter under a tree. Spread group out (not clustered). Crouch low with feet together on insulating mat. Stay off ridge lines.

β›³ Open ground

Crouch low, feet together, hands over ears. Do NOT lie flat. Never stand under isolated trees. Move away from hills and high points.

🏊 Water

Exit water immediately at any sign of a storm. Lightning can travel long distances through water. Wait until 30 minutes after last thunder.

🌑️ Temperature affects sound speed: Sound travels faster in warm air. At 20Β°C, speed of sound β‰ˆ 343 m/s (5 seconds per mile, or 3 seconds per km). At 0Β°C it's ~331 m/s. The calculator adjusts for temperature automatically. The "5 second = 1 mile" rule assumes roughly 20Β°C.
⚑ Why light is instant: Light travels at 300,000 km/s β€” for distances of a few miles, the delay is microseconds, effectively zero. You see the flash instantly. The thunder delay is entirely sound travel time.
