How Cord Consumption Is Estimated

Cord consumption per knot depends on the knot type, cord diameter, and how tightly the knots are tied. Thicker cord wraps around itself in a larger arc, using more length per knot. A square knot typically consumes about 1โ€“1.5x the cord diameter per working cord per knot. Half hitches use slightly less. Spiral/half-square knots use the same as a full square knot per revolution.

These are average estimates. Always add a 15โ€“25% buffer when cutting cords for a new pattern โ€” it is much easier to trim excess cord than to run short midway through a project.

Cutting Length vs. Working Length

The cut length of each cord must be long enough to complete all its knots and reach the finished edge. For a working cord that ties 50 square knots with 5mm cord, you need about 150โ€“200 cm of working cord. Filler (carrier) cords that are knotted around, rather than doing the knotting, can be cut to finished length plus fringe. Always fold cords in half at the lark's head mount โ€” so the cord you cut must be double the working length.
