Mulliganing Analysis

A "keepable" hand typically has 2โ€“4 lands. How often will you see one without mulliganing?

How Land Counts Are Calculated

The classic formula for recommended lands is based on your average converted mana cost (CMC). Frank Karsten's research suggests: Lands โ‰ˆ (Deck Size ร— 0.4) โˆ’ (14 โˆ’ CMC) roughly, adjusted for format. Limited decks run 17โ€“18 lands in 40 cards; Standard runs 24โ€“26 in 60.

Opening hand probabilities use the hypergeometric distribution: P(k successes in n draws from N cards with K successes) = C(K,k)ร—C(Nโˆ’K,nโˆ’k)/C(N,n).

Mulligan to 6 means drawing a new 7, choosing 6: the new hand size is 6. This is modelled as a hypergeometric draw of 6 from the same deck.
