🃏 MTG Mana Calculator
Calculate optimal land counts, mana base distribution, and opening hand probabilities for Magic: The Gathering.
Probability of drawing exactly N lands in your opening 7.
| Lands in Hand | 7-card hand | Mull to 6 | Mull to 5 |
|---|
Probability of having the right coloured mana available on curve, assuming correct land distribution.
| Turn | Have โฅ N lands | Colour Available | On Curve |

A "keepable" hand typically has 2โ4 lands. How often will you see one without mulliganing?
How Land Counts Are Calculated
The classic formula for recommended lands is based on your average converted mana cost (CMC). Frank Karsten's research suggests: Lands โ (Deck Size ร 0.4) โ (14 โ CMC) roughly, adjusted for format. Limited decks run 17โ18 lands in 40 cards; Standard runs 24โ26 in 60.
Opening hand probabilities use the hypergeometric distribution: P(k successes in n draws from N cards with K successes) = C(K,k)รC(NโK,nโk)/C(N,n).
Mulligan to 6 means drawing a new 7, choosing 6: the new hand size is 6. This is modelled as a hypergeometric draw of 6 from the same deck.
