What is an MVNO?
A Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) is a wireless carrier that doesn't own its own network infrastructure. Instead, MVNOs lease network capacity from major carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) and resell it at significantly lower prices.
MVNO Tradeoffs to Know
- Deprioritization: During network congestion, MVNO customers are typically deprioritized behind the host carrier's own customers, which can mean slower speeds at peak times.
- No priority data: Most MVNOs don't offer true priority data like postpaid flagship plans do.
- Limited customer support: MVNO support is often online-only or limited hours compared to major carriers.
- Hotspot limits: Tethering/hotspot speeds or data caps may be more restrictive.
- Same coverage: You use the exact same towers as the parent network โ coverage maps are identical.
- No device subsidies: MVNOs rarely subsidize new phones, though many support bring-your-own-device (BYOD).
For most users who don't need premium support or consistent peak-hour speeds, MVNOs offer the same everyday experience at a fraction of the cost.
