Paper Type Guide
| Paper Type | Weight | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kami (origami paper) | 60โ80 gsm | Most standard models | Colored one side; crisp folds |
| Copy / Printer paper | 75โ90 gsm | Practice, flat models | Not ideal for 3D or wet-folding |
| Washi | 40โ60 gsm | Complex models, wet-folding | Strong but soft; excellent texture |
| Foil-backed paper | 50โ70 gsm | Roses, insects, detailed work | Holds creases perfectly; less forgiving |
| Tissue foil | 30โ50 gsm | Advanced insects, wet-folding | Very thin; excellent for complex models |
Square vs Rectangle
Most origami models require a square sheet. A few classic designs โ like the traditional paper airplane, hat, and cup โ use rectangles. When converting a rectangle to a square, fold one corner to the adjacent edge and cut off the excess strip.
The standard kami origami sheet is 6"ร6" (15cmร15cm), which works well for most beginner and intermediate models. For complex models with many layers (roses, modular polyhedra), use larger sheets โ 10" or more โ until you're comfortable with the folding sequence.
