Why Passive Voice & AI Phrases Matter
Passive voice isn't always wrong β but overuse weakens writing by removing the subject who performs the action. "The report was written by the team" buries the actor. "The team wrote the report" is direct and clear. Most style guides recommend keeping passive voice below 20% of sentences.
AI language models are trained on text that rewards completeness and hedging. This produces characteristic filler phrases β "it's worth noting", "in the realm of", "delve into" β that add length without adding meaning. These phrases appear at far higher rates in AI-generated text than in human writing, making them useful signals.
Hedge words like "perhaps", "might", and "arguably" aren't always bad β sometimes hedging is accurate. But excessive hedging in professional writing signals uncertainty and weakens authority.
