About Plant Watering

Overwatering is the number one cause of houseplant death โ€” it creates anaerobic conditions in the soil that promote root rot. Most plants prefer the "soak and dry" method: water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom, then allow the top portion of soil to dry before watering again.

The recommendations here are starting points. Always check soil moisture before watering โ€” stick your finger 1โ€“2 inches into the soil (or use a moisture meter). Factors like direct sun, heating vents, terracotta vs. plastic pots, and local climate all affect how fast soil dries.

Seasonal adjustments are critical: most houseplants slow their growth in winter and need significantly less water. Tropical plants that are actively growing in summer may need watering twice as often as in winter.
