The Rule of 2 and 4

A quick mental shortcut for estimating your odds:
Rule of 4: After the flop (2 cards to come), multiply your outs by 4 to get your approximate % chance of hitting.
Rule of 2: After the turn (1 card to come), multiply your outs by 2 to get your approximate % chance.
Example: Flush draw (9 outs) โ†’ 9ร—4 = 36% on flop, 9ร—2 = 18% on turn. Actual: ~35% and ~19.6%.

About Poker Odds

Poker is fundamentally a game of incomplete information where decisions are made based on probability. Understanding pot odds โ€” the ratio of the potential gain to the cost of calling โ€” helps determine mathematically correct decisions regardless of reads or feel.

The "outs" system counts the unseen cards that improve your hand to a winner. With 47 unseen cards after the flop and 46 after the turn, each out represents roughly 2.1% per card to come.
