The Pomodoro Technique
Developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s (using a tomato-shaped kitchen timer โ "pomodoro" in Italian), the technique structures work into focused intervals separated by short rests.
- 1.Choose a task to work on.
- 2.Set the timer for 25 minutes and work with full focus.
- 3.When the timer rings, take a 5-minute break.
- 4.After 4 pomodoros, take a longer 15โ30 minute break.
- 5.Repeat. Track completed pomodoros to measure productivity.
The technique works because it makes time tangible, creates urgency, builds in recovery, and provides a concrete unit for estimating and tracking work. Research on focused work intervals consistently shows productivity benefits from structured breaks.
