Safety Warnings
- Never mix pool chemicals together โ always add chemicals to water, not water to chemicals.
- Add one chemical at a time and wait at least 15โ30 minutes (ideally with pump running) before adding another.
- Wear gloves and eye protection when handling pool chemicals.
- Store chemicals in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and other chemicals.
- Keep children and pets away from the pool while adding chemicals. Wait until levels normalize before swimming.
Pool Water Balance Guide
Balanced pool water protects swimmers from irritation, protects your equipment from corrosion, and keeps your pool looking clear and inviting. The four pillars of water balance are chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, and cyanuric acid.
| Parameter | Ideal Range | Effect if Low | Effect if High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free Chlorine | 2โ4 ppm | Algae, bacteria growth | Eye irritation, bleaching |
| pH | 7.4โ7.6 | Corrosion, eye irritation | Cloudy water, chlorine loss |
| Total Alkalinity | 80โ120 ppm | pH instability | Cloudy water, scaling |
| Cyanuric Acid | 30โ50 ppm | Rapid chlorine loss in sun | Chlorine lock (high: drain partial) |
Always test your pool water 2โ3 times per week during swim season and after heavy use or rain. A proper test kit or test strips will give you the readings needed for this calculator.
