Pool Decking Materials: Pros & Cons
Concrete ($8โ12/sqft)
The most popular choice. Durable and affordable, but can get very hot in direct sun and may crack over time. Can be stamped or textured for a more premium look at added cost.
Pavers ($12โ20/sqft)
Individual units can be replaced if cracked or stained. Excellent drainage between joints. Slightly higher upfront cost but lower long-term maintenance. Can shift over time if base settles.
Natural Stone ($18โ30/sqft)
Flagstone, slate, and bluestone are naturally cool underfoot and beautiful. Irregular shapes mean more labor. Requires sealing annually to prevent staining.
Wood ($15โ25/sqft)
Warm and natural aesthetic. Cedar and redwood resist rot naturally. Requires regular sealing/staining. Pressure-treated pine is cheaper but splinters over time.
Composite ($20โ28/sqft)
Low maintenance โ no staining or sealing needed. Resistant to rot, splinters, and fading. More expensive upfront but excellent lifespan of 25โ30 years.
Travertine ($20โ30/sqft)
A premium limestone that stays surprisingly cool even in direct sun due to its porous structure. Elegant appearance but requires sealing and can be slippery when wet if not textured.
Note: Labor cost is estimated at approximately equal to material cost, which is typical for most deck installations. Complex designs, sloped yards, or premium materials may push labor higher.
