Spring Pool Opening Tips
The best time to open your pool is when water temperatures consistently reach 65ยฐF (18ยฐC). Opening too early wastes chemicals on cold water where algae is unlikely to grow. Opening too late with warm water can allow algae to establish before you treat it.
If the pool wasn't properly closed: You may encounter green or black water, heavy algae, and equipment issues. Start with a thorough super-chlorination (triple shock), let it circulate for 24 hours, then test and balance chemistry. You may need to repeat shocking if the water is severely green.
Cover care: Never let water accumulate on a closed cover. Use a cover pump to remove standing water before removing the cover. Store your cover clean and dry โ rinse both sides, let dry completely, fold and store in a bag to prevent mildew.
Equipment inspection: Before starting the pump, visually inspect all plumbing, fittings, and equipment for cracks or damage from freezing. A cracked pump housing or filter tank should be replaced before running the system.
