Why Does Pool Volume Matter?
Knowing your pool's exact volume is the foundation of proper pool care. Every chemical dosage — chlorine, pH adjusters, algaecides, and shock — is calculated based on how many gallons of water you have. An undersized dose leaves your pool under-treated; an oversized dose wastes money and can irritate swimmers.
Pool volume also matters when sizing equipment: pumps, filters, heaters, and salt-chlorine generators all have gallon ratings. Running undersized equipment means poor circulation and cloudy water.
Formulas used: Rectangle: L × W × avg depth. Oval: L × W × avg depth × 0.785. Round: diameter² × avg depth × 0.785. L-Shape: sum of two rectangles. Kidney: oval formula × 0.85. Conversion: 1 cubic foot = 7.48 gallons = 28.317 liters.
