Why Winterize Your Pool?

Properly closing your pool for winter prevents algae growth, protects equipment from freeze damage, and makes spring opening much easier. A poorly closed pool can develop staining, scaling, and severe algae blooms that take weeks and hundreds of dollars to remediate.

Chemistry first: Balancing water chemistry before closing is critical. Properly balanced water at closing prevents corrosion, scale, and staining over the winter months. Pay particular attention to alkalinity (80โ€“120 ppm) and calcium hardness (175โ€“225 ppm) as these protect your surfaces and equipment.

Freeze protection: In cold climates, the biggest risk is water freezing inside pipes, fittings, and equipment. Frozen water expands with enough force to crack PVC pipes, pump housings, and filter tanks. Blow out plumbing lines and drain all equipment thoroughly.

Timing: Close your pool when the water temperature consistently stays below 65ยฐF (18ยฐC). Closing too early with warm water encourages algae growth under the cover.
