How Unit Pricing Works
Price per unit = Total Price / Quantity. For example, a 32 oz bottle at $4.00 costs $0.125/oz, while a 16 oz bottle at $2.50 costs $0.156/oz — the larger size is cheaper per ounce.
Unit normalization: This tool converts between related units so comparisons are always apples-to-apples. Ounces (oz) and pounds (lb) are normalized to oz; milliliters (ml) and liters (L) are normalized to ml; all others (count, ft) are compared directly.
- 1 lb = 16 oz (weight)
- 1 L = 1,000 ml (volume)
- Count, ft, and other units are compared as-is
Retailers are legally required to display unit prices on shelf labels in many jurisdictions. Comparing unit prices is the most reliable way to find the best value regardless of package size.
