Single vs double-fold binding
Most quilts use double-fold binding (also called French binding): strips are folded in half lengthwise before attaching. This creates a durable two-layer edge. The strip width is usually 2.25"โ2.5" for double-fold. Single-fold binding uses narrower strips (about 1.25") and is less common today.
Mitering corners
To miter corners, stop sewing 1/4" from each corner and backstitch. Fold the binding up at 45ยฐ, then fold back down flush with the next side and continue sewing. This creates clean, flat mitered corners. Press each corner flat before hand-stitching the binding to the back.
Joining strips on the bias
Join binding strips end-to-end with a diagonal (bias) seam to reduce bulk. Place two strips right-angle to each other, right sides together, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner, sew on the line, trim leaving 1/4" seam, press open.
