How binding length is calculated
The total binding length = 2 Γ (width + height) + extra for joins. This gives the perimeter of the quilt. Extra inches (default 12") account for joining strip ends on the diagonal and for mitering corners.
Strips from width of fabric (WOF)
Each strip is cut the full width of your fabric (usually 44"). The number of strips = ceil(total binding length Γ· WOF). Total fabric needed = strips Γ strip width, rounded up to the nearest β
yard.
Choosing a binding width
2" strips give a very narrow β " finished binding β sleek and modern. 2ΒΌ" is often used for machine quilting. 2Β½" is the most common double-fold width β yields about Β½" of visible binding on the back. Wider binding shows more on the back but is easier to stitch by hand.
