Common block sizes

The most popular finished block sizes are 6", 9", 12", and 15". A 12" block is the quilting standard โ€” it's easy to divide into half-square triangles, four-patches, and nine-patches. Smaller blocks (4"โ€“6") suit intricate patterns; larger blocks (16"โ€“20") make fast, modern quilts.

What is sashing?

Sashing is fabric strips sewn between quilt blocks to separate and frame them. It makes individual blocks stand out and lets you use fewer blocks to reach your finished quilt size. A sashing width of 2"โ€“3" is common for most quilts.

The calculator counts horizontal sashing strips (rows between block rows, plus the outer border row) and vertical sashing strips (columns between blocks, plus the outer border columns). Cornerstone squares at intersections are not included here but are easy to add.
