The 60/30/10 rule

Borrowed from interior design: use your dominant fabric 60% of the time, a secondary fabric 30%, and an accent fabric 10%. The accent is often the boldest or most contrasting color — it makes the design pop without overwhelming it.

Value vs color

Value refers to how light or dark a fabric appears, regardless of its color. In quilting, value contrast is often more important than color contrast. A quilt with strong light/dark contrast will "read" clearly from across a room. Low-value contrast creates a soft, blended look. A common trick: take a photo and convert it to grayscale to check your value contrast.

Rounding blocks

When blocks don't divide evenly by percentage, the planner rounds each fabric's block count to the nearest whole number. The actual percentages may differ slightly from the targets. This is normal — in practice, one or two extra blocks in a fabric rarely affects the overall look of a quilt.
