Pre-washing fabric
Always pre-wash your fabric before cutting. Cotton fabric can shrink 3โ5% when first washed. Pre-washing prevents your finished quilt from distorting after its first wash. Press the fabric flat after washing before measuring and cutting.
Grain lines
Cut pieces on the straight grain (parallel to the selvage) whenever possible. Bias-cut edges (at a 45ยฐ angle to the grain) stretch easily and can cause distortion, especially on block edges. Keeping block edges on the straight grain gives you a more stable, flat quilt top.
Yardage is calculated assuming 44" usable fabric width (standard quilting cotton after trimming selvages). Add 10โ15% extra for mistakes and pre-wash shrinkage.
