How fabric yardage is calculated
Each block requires one cut of fabric. Strips are cut across the width of fabric (WOF), which is typically 44" after washing and removing selvages. The number of blocks per strip is floor(WOF Γ· cut block size), where cut size = finished size + Β½" seam allowance.
Sashing strips run both horizontally and vertically between blocks. The total sashing yardage is calculated separately and rounded up to the nearest β yard. Border yardage accounts for all four sides sewn continuously around the quilt. Always add 10β15% extra for squaring up and cutting errors.
Rounding to nearest β yard
Fabric is sold in increments of β yard (4.5"). The calculator always rounds up so you don't run short. A fat quarter is ΒΌ yard (18" Γ 22").
Binding tip
Double-fold binding uses strips cut at 2.5" wide (finished β "βΒ½" binding). Cut strips crosswise and join on the diagonal for a seamless look. You'll need enough strips to go around the perimeter plus about 12" extra for joins and mitering corners.
