How Shipping Rates Are Calculated
Carriers charge based on the greater of your package's actual weight or its dimensional (DIM) weight. DIM weight is calculated as Length ร Width ร Height divided by a DIM factor (typically 139 for UPS and FedEx). This means a large, light package can cost significantly more than its actual weight would suggest.
Weight zones group packages by actual billed weight, and rates escalate as weight increases. Service level (Ground, 2-Day, Overnight) multiplies the base rate โ overnight can be 3โ5x the cost of ground service.
Tips to Reduce Shipping Costs
Right-size your boxes
Oversized boxes inflate DIM weight. Use the smallest box that fits safely.
Negotiate rates
Both UPS and FedEx offer volume discounts. Even small businesses can negotiate 20โ40% off list rates.
Use USPS for light packages
USPS tends to be cheapest for packages under 1 lb, especially with Priority Mail Flat Rate options.
Compare regularly
Carrier rates change frequently. Re-evaluate your shipping strategy at least annually.
