How Shipping Rates Are Calculated

Carriers charge based on the greater of your package's actual weight or its dimensional (DIM) weight. DIM weight is calculated as Length ร— Width ร— Height divided by a DIM factor (typically 139 for UPS and FedEx). This means a large, light package can cost significantly more than its actual weight would suggest.

Weight zones group packages by actual billed weight, and rates escalate as weight increases. Service level (Ground, 2-Day, Overnight) multiplies the base rate โ€” overnight can be 3โ€“5x the cost of ground service.

Tips to Reduce Shipping Costs

Right-size your boxes

Oversized boxes inflate DIM weight. Use the smallest box that fits safely.

Negotiate rates

Both UPS and FedEx offer volume discounts. Even small businesses can negotiate 20โ€“40% off list rates.

Use USPS for light packages

USPS tends to be cheapest for packages under 1 lb, especially with Priority Mail Flat Rate options.

Compare regularly

Carrier rates change frequently. Re-evaluate your shipping strategy at least annually.
