What Are Shipping Zones?
Shipping zones are geographic groupings used by carriers to standardize rate calculations. Zone 1 is the lowest (local), and Zone 8 is the highest (across the country). Each zone step up typically adds $2โ8 to your base shipping rate, so shipping cross-country can cost significantly more than shipping regionally.
USPS, UPS, and FedEx all use zone-based pricing, though their exact zone boundaries and rates differ. This calculator uses an approximation based on ZIP code prefixes. For exact zone lookups, use each carrier's official zone chart tool.
Ship from the center
Businesses that fulfill from central US locations (like Kansas or Missouri) reach more customers in Zone 1โ4 than coastal warehouses.
Multi-node fulfillment
Using two or more fulfillment centers can cut average zone distance, lowering per-shipment costs significantly.
Zone skipping
Large shippers use zone-skipping โ trucking bulk orders closer to destination before injecting into the carrier network at a lower zone.
