What Does SIM Unlocking Mean?
A SIM-locked phone only works with the carrier it was purchased from. Unlocking removes this restriction, allowing you to use any compatible carrier's SIM card โ useful when switching carriers, traveling internationally, or reselling your device.
Common Misconceptions
- Unlocking is not the same as paying off your device. Paying off your installment plan satisfies the financial obligation, but you may still need to request the unlock separately.
- iPhones and Androids unlock differently. After an unlock is approved, iPhone users typically just insert the new SIM. Android devices may need a specific unlock code provided by the carrier.
- Verizon is the exception. Verizon's LTE and 5G devices are sold unlocked by default after a brief waiting period. No formal request is typically needed.
- An unlocked phone may still have band incompatibility. A T-Mobile phone unlocked and moved to AT&T may not support all AT&T frequency bands โ always check network compatibility before switching.
