How This Calculator Works

Step count is converted to distance using your estimated stride length (height × 0.413 for walking). Distance and speed determine your walking time, and calories are calculated using MET values (Metabolic Equivalent of Task): slow walking = 2.5, normal = 3.5, brisk = 4.5, fast = 5.5. Formula: Calories = MET × weight (kg) × hours.

The 10,000 steps/day guideline originated from a Japanese marketing campaign in the 1960s. Research suggests benefits plateau around 7,500 steps/day for longevity, though more steps generally means more calorie burn.
