Why Gauge Changes Matter

Gauge is the number of stitches and rows per inch (or 4 inches) in your knitting or crochet. If your gauge differs from the pattern โ€” even by half a stitch โ€” the final dimensions will change. This resizer calculates the new stitch and row counts you need to achieve the same finished measurements as the original pattern, but at your actual gauge.

How to Measure Your Gauge

Make a swatch at least 6 inches wide using the same yarn, needles or hook, and stitch pattern called for. Wash and block the swatch the same way you will treat the finished project. Measure a central 4-inch span (not the edges). Count the stitches and rows in that 4-inch section โ€” that is your gauge.

When to Use This Tool

Use this tool when you want to knit a pattern with a different yarn than specified, when you cannot match the pattern gauge no matter what needle size you use, or when you want to knit the same pattern in a different size without a formal size chart. Stitch count adjustments are usually reliable; row count adjustments are less critical if you work to a measurement instead of a row count.
