How Surfboard Volume is Calculated

Volume in litres (L) is the most reliable way to size a surfboard for your body weight and ability. The industry-standard multipliers are: Beginner: 0.6–0.7Γ— body weight in kg, Intermediate: 0.35–0.5Γ—, Advanced: 0.25–0.35Γ—, and Pro: 0.20–0.28Γ—.

Wave type and fitness adjust the result β€” mushy small waves reward extra volume for paddle power, while hollow powerful waves reward lower volume for performance. Fitness level affects how easily you can paddle and catch waves on lower volume.

These are starting points. Personal preference, surf style, and conditions all play a role. Many surfers ride a range of boards for different conditions.
