📐 The real capacity rule: Subtract 1–2 people from the manufacturer's rating. A "4-person" tent comfortably sleeps 3 adults with sleeping bags and small items. With backpacks and gear inside, comfortably 2. Manufacturer ratings assume sleeping bags only, no gear, no personal space.
🌧️ Seasonality ratings: 2-season = summer camping only, no rain fly required. 3-season = spring/summer/autumn, handles rain and wind well. 4-season = winter-capable, handles snow load and strong winds. Geodesic poles provide the best structural integrity.
Ventilation matters: Look for mesh inner panels and ground vents combined with a full fly that covers them. Good air circulation prevents condensation build-up inside the tent, which is often mistaken for a leak.
